On the Infinite Dignity of Man

And on the tragic loss of that dignity

April 24th, 2024

As we approach the 50th anniversary of the encyclical "On the Infinite Dignity of Man" by Pope Paul VI, it is worth reflecting on its enduring relevance and the tragic loss of human dignity that we witness around the world today.

In "On the Infinite Dignity of Man," Pope Paul VI affirmed the fundamental truth that every human person is created in the image and likeness of God, and therefore possesses an inherent and inviolable dignity. He declared that "every human being has the right to life, and from his first moment of existence - not just from conception - he has the right to the means necessary for his proper and full development."

However, in the half-century since the encyclical was published, the world has witnessed a growing disregard for human dignity. In our current age of technological advancement and globalized markets, we often treat people as mere objects or commodities, rather than as beings worthy of respect and compassion.

This loss of human dignity has devastating consequences. It leads to poverty, inequality, violence, and war. It undermines the foundations of society and makes it difficult to build a just and peaceful world.

In the face of these challenges, we must recommit ourselves to the principles of human dignity enshrined in "On the Infinite Dignity of Man." We must work to create a society where every person is treated with respect and has the opportunity to live a full and flourishing life.

This will not be an easy task, but it is essential for the future of our world. By recognizing the infinite dignity of every human person, we can build a better future for ourselves and for generations to come.
