Germany put ten-man Scotland to the sword
Scotland's hopes of reaching the latter stages of Euro 2024 have suffered a blow after they were thrashed 3-0 by Germany in their opening match in Munich.
First-half goals from Kai Havertz, Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala left Steve Clarke's side with a mountain to climb, and their task was made even harder when Nathan Patterson was sent off shortly before the break.
Scotland had started the game brightly, but they were undone by a clinical German performance. Havertz opened the scoring with a header from a Joshua Kimmich cross, and Wirtz doubled the lead with a fine finish from the edge of the area.
Musiala then made it 3-0 with a stunning solo goal, leaving Scotland facing an uphill battle. Patterson's red card for a reckless challenge on Havertz made their task even more difficult, and they were unable to find a way back into the game in the second half.
The defeat leaves Scotland bottom of Group F, and they will need to beat Croatia in their next match to have any chance of reaching the knockout stages.
Conclusion
Scotland's defeat to Germany was a disappointing start to their Euro 2024 campaign. They were outplayed by a German team that was simply too strong for them, and they will need to improve significantly if they are to have any chance of progressing to the latter stages of the tournament.
