Early Life and Career
Kamala Devi Harris (born October 20, 1964) is an American politician and attorney who is the 49th and current vice president of the United States. She is the first woman, first African American, and first Asian American to hold the office.
Family and Education
Harris is the eldest of two children born to Shyamala Gopalan, an Indian breast cancer researcher, and Donald Harris, a Jamaican economics professor. She grew up in Berkeley, California, and attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she earned a bachelor's degree in political science and economics.
Legal Career
After graduating from Howard, Harris moved to California and earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She worked as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County and later as the district attorney of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011.
