The August Supermoon Blue Moon A Cosmic Spectacle

The August Supermoon Blue Moon: A Cosmic Spectacle

What is a Supermoon Blue Moon?

The August moon is a rare cosmic trifecta, known as a "Supermoon Blue Moon".

  • Supermoon: When a full moon occurs at the moon's closest point to Earth, making it appear larger and brighter.
  • Blue Moon: The second full moon within a calendar month, a relatively uncommon occurrence (every 2.7 years).

When to See the Supermoon Blue Moon

Peak Visibility: 9:36 PM EDT, on August 30-31, 2023 Best Viewing Time: Throughout the evening and into the early hours of the following morning

What to Expect

The Supermoon Blue Moon is expected to be a breathtaking sight, appearing larger and brighter than usual due to its proximity to Earth.

  • Size: Up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon.
  • Color: While often called a "Blue Moon", it does not actually appear blue. Its name stems from an old Farmers' Almanac misprint.
